There are lots of Spanish destinations to choose from and one region of Spain often ends up at the bottom of the best places in Spain: Extremadura. Why? No famous Spanish beaches...but I say beaches-smeaches...get away from the coasts and unlock a treasure chest of Spanish travel options.
Tucked in the heart of one of the most looked-over regions of Spain: Extremadura, Trujillo was a playground for conquistadors in the heyday of 'discovery'. The conquistadors and their sticky fingers built this gorgeous city on the riches of their American conquests.
The main square of Trujillo is a lively hub full of restaurants and shops and buildings adorned with picturesque facades, showcasing a blend of Renaissance, Gothic, and Moorish influences.

Trujillo's legacy is deeply rooted in the exploration era, as it was the hometown of the infamous conquistador Francisco Pizarro.

Trujillo is best discovered on foot and our family loved wandering the quiet and uncrowded streets. Certainly a gem among gems.
Roughly 3 hours west of Madrid, Trujillo and neighbouring Caceres are well worth the drive and at least a day dedicated to discovering each. Either town would also make an ideal hub for discovering the breathtaking region of Extremadura, Spain.
