| Roman Temple, Évora, Portugal |
Évora, Portugal is a captivating day trip from Lisbon at only an hour and a half by car into the heart of Portugal. It seems a shame to me that most holiday goers only hug the shores and beaches of Portugal. As a Canadian, I get it. Heck, on holiday all I want is some sun, sea, and delicious food!! However, since Portugal is so narrow (3 hours from east to west) there's no reason not to fold up your beach chair and hit the interior. You won't be disappointed!

Walking to the Basílica Sé de Nossa Senhora da Assunção which houses the Chapel of Bones. Évora, Portugal |
Évora, in the heart of the Alentejo region, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a treasure trove of ancient wonders. Explore the Roman temple, the iconic Cathedral of Évora (featuring the eerie and amazing Chapel of Bones), and the charming streets of the historic center.
We didn't get into the Chapel of Bones until our third visit to Evora as I would rather stick toothpicks in my eyeballs than stand in a line. Luckily, there are many more sights in Évora to enjoy - and on our third trip there wasn't a single line. Being a tourist on weekdays, rainy days or low season certainly has its perks!

| Over 5,000 souls make up The Chapel of Bones. Évora, Portugal |
The Chapel was created in the 16th century, when cemeteries in and around Évora occupied precious land. In an effort to honor the resting souls monks opted to construct the Chapel and relocate the bones and display them openly. The Chapel of Bones in Évora is astounding in scale and houses approximately 5,000 interred corpses.
The purpose of the Chapel is made clear by a poignant poem that hangs in the Chapel. I'll paste it at the bottom of this post!
Évora's allure extends beyond its historical landmarks. The city and the Alentejo is renowned for its gastronomy. Ever heard of migas? Imagine Thanksgiving stuffing filled garlic then formed into a mini loaf then sauteed in olive oil. Did I sell it? It's hard to explain or describe but 'oh meu Deus' it is heavenly!
Beyond its cultural and culinary delights, Évora is surrounded by scenic landscapes and vineyards, making it an ideal hub for exploring the Alentejo region. If, like me, you too enjoy the most beautiful drink this planet has ever produced—wine—then the Alentejo region of Portugal is a wine lover's paradise.
Whether you're a passionate history enthusiast, a Portuguese food lover, or an intrepid adventurer, Évora guarantees an unforgettable Portuguese experience that will create enduring memories.

Explore ancient wonders, indulge in mouthwatering local cuisine, and create lasting memories in this UNESCO World Heritage gem at the heart of Portugal's Alentejo region.
As promised...the beautiful poem hanging in the Evora Chapel of Bones:
“Where are you going in such a hurry traveler? Pause… do not advance your travel; You have no greater concern Than this one: That on which you focus your sight.
Recall how many have passed from this world, Reflect on your similar end, There is good reason to reflect. If only all did the same.
Ponder, you so influenced by fate, Among all the many concerns of the world, so little do you reflect on death.
If by chance you glance at this place, Stop… for the sake of your journey, The more you pause, the further on your journey you will be.”
